Liberal Ladies of the Lowcountry was launched in 2011 by a small group of liberal women who met at a neighborhood function and found commonalities in their social and political views. After an initial luncheon meeting that encouraged open and candid conversation, this group of women decided to meet regularly to freely share their ideas about social issues, politics, and local and statewide concerns. Others were invited to join, and the group grew steadily.
Guest speakers were at times part of the monthly meeting, while networking was always a primary focus.
When the group grew to more than 30 members, the need to organize became apparent. The first by-laws were written and dues were charged. By 2013, Liberal Ladies had grown to 90 members.
By the spring of 2016, as America was contemplated electing its first female president, membership was approaching 300. In 2019 the organization reached 500 paid members encompassing women from many cultures, professions and walks of life, living in Hilton Head, Bluffton and other areas of Beaufort County, South Carolina.
